Home Decor: Uses of Pendant Lighting

Pendant Lighting

Now, when we take a deeper look at pendant lighting, we begin to understand why it is gaining in popularity. Among those reasons is the fact that the lighting is so versatile and practical to use. This lighting can be and is in many cases even more elegant than the finest chandelier because of this versatility. Considering any layout of the lighting that you can think, whether it's a circle, swirl, square, oval or whatever, and then the lighting hanging at varying heights, the end result can certainly be quite breathtaking. The very first thing that you will want to do before settling on any style and making a purchase, is to compare the various styles of pendant lighting that is available on the market today. There are literally hundreds of styles available, and with the advent of technology on our heels, there is no longer any reason why we have to "settle" for what's available at our local store. To SummarizeOther UsesPendant lighting is simply light fixtures that hang down from the ceiling. They have a unique look and this type of lighting is perfect in the kitchen, above the wet bar and in other such locations. This type of lighting is best mounted about 30 inches or so above the area that you wish to be lighted for the best effect. Dramatic Effects The wonderful thing about these light fixtures is that they can be used to create dramatic effects by hanging the lights at varying heights, and in fact, if hung properly, the lights can be raised or lowered at will effectively changing the appearance of the set.Pendant lighting fixtures can be found in most home remodeling stores, and they come in a wide range of styles and colors. The most popular of styles seems to be those that consist of stained glass or etched crystal. They are generally made of hand blown glass and pricing can range anywhere from $30 per fixture to $500.00 or more for each one depending on the workmanship involved. Indeed many online stores offer special deals including free shipping, and even when free shipping isn't available when they offer special sales and discounts on pendant lighting fixtures. Research, then research some more because the worst possible thing you can do is settle for a product that is less than desirable to you, only to find something that you like better when having a look online. Whatever your budget is, with the number of locations available online and off that offer pendant lighting you are sure to find something that appeals to your taste and remains within the budget allowed for the expenditure. As for me, I would take pendant lighting over a chandelier anytime!Where to find Pendant Lighting

Common Outdoor Lighting Mistakes and Their Solutions

Upgrading your homes exterior lighting is a surefire way to increase your homes curb appeal and resell value. And a well-lit front lawn can also deter would-be burglars. Most of all the outdoor lighting of ones home adds a welcoming touch for family and guests. Here you can learn about outdoor lighting trends, common lighting problems and their solutions, and things to consider when selecting outdoor lighting fixtures.

Another common mistake in selecting outdoor lights is in finding the proper lighting direction, or limiting light pollution. Outdoor lights should not obstruct ones vision or interfere with one being able to see the entire landscape of a yard or area clearly. On a similar note, the lights should not shine directly into the road or a neighboring yard either. To avoid such issues, look for spotlights with glare guards.First and foremost, its important to give a considerable amount of thought to the placement of your outdoor lights. Just as you would not place several lighting fixtures like table lamps or wall sconces in a single area of your living room, you dont want to place exterior fixtures too close together either. This is a common problem when integrating pathlights into your outdoor lighting solution. Too many pathlights, too close together can make your walkway look more like the runway at an airport. Instead of placing the lights directly opposite one another on either end, try a staggered approach. The light will flow less harshly.Just as it would be boring to find the same exact lamp in every room of ones home, its boring to see the same outdoor lighting fixture repeated throughout the yard. It can make the home appear institutional as opposed to personal. Use a wide variety of fixtures to light your yard; it will enhance the character and charm of your home. Finally, like most things in home dcor, less is more. Outdoor lighting should call attention to the beautiful and unique features of your home. It should not be intrusive. Proper outdoor lighting calls attention to various parts of your homes exterior, not the entire surface area. Over illumination is never attractive indoor or outdoor.

SC Johnson 'Flip the Switch' Initiative Reduces Energy Use By 35 Percent Per Fixture at Its Largest Manufacturing Plant

Employee-driven Effort Underscores Savings Possible from Monitoring Energy Consumption

The Waxdale plant, which manufactures such well-known brands as GLADE, WINDEX, and SCRUBBING BUBBLES, has taken a number of leading environmental steps over the past several years. The facility is powered by cogenerated electricity from twin turbines that run on renewable waste methane from a public landfill and natural gas, eliminating 52,000 tons of GHG emissions per year as a result. In 2007, Waxdale was recognized by the Center for Resource Solutions for using Green-e certified energy, the leading renewable-energy certification and verification program in the United States. Most recently, Waxdale's initiatives contributed to SC Johnson's achievement of a 27.4 percent absolute reduction in GHGs from 2005 levels, exceeding the eight percent reduction target the company set through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders program. The International Energy Agency estimates that such energy-efficiency initiatives in buildings, industrial processes and transportation could reduce the world's energy needs in 2050 by one third and help control global GHG emissions. Given that there are more than 32,000 manufacturing facilities(i) in the U.S. alone, initiatives like this pose a significant opportunity for other sites to accomplish similar environmental goals.Waxdale Employee Initiated CampaignAbout SC Johnson(i) http://www.manta.com/mb_33_E7_000/manufacturing?refine_company_loctype=H&refine_company_loctype=B&refine_company_loctype=S"We believe it's important to continuously embrace energy conservation and develop best practices to improve daily operations and, ultimately, our overall business," says Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President of Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability. "We're particularly proud of this program as it was actually initiated by a manufacturing team member and it's a great example of environmental sustainability in action. The project underscores the huge energy savings possible throughout industry by employing efficient energy practices.Learn more about SC Johnson's energy and sustainability efforts.SC Johnson is a family-owned and managed business dedicated to innovative, high-quality products, excellence in the workplace and a long-term commitment to the environment and the communities in which it operates. It markets such well-known brands as GLADE, OFF!, PLEDGE, RAID, SCRUBBING BUBBLES, SHOUT, WINDEX and ZIPLOC in the U.S. and beyond, with brands marketed outside the U.S. including AUTAN, BAYGON, BRISE, KABIKILLER, KLEAR, and MR. MUSCLE. The 125-year-old company, with more than $8 billion in sales, employs approximately 12,000 people globally and sells products in virtually every country around the world. www.scjohnson.comThe "Flip the Switch" campaign aims to pare energy use, including turning off lights, fans and other energy-consuming equipment when not in use. The new light fixtures, for instance, generate a higher level of lumens, or brightness, while using far less power. Motion sensors have been installed in limited use meeting rooms and other areas to help reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs. The facility also recently installed photovoltaic solar panels to power a new safety sign at the plant's entrance that furnishes safety statistics and employee updates. Combining this renewables innovation with the employee behavior change and the lighting retrofit helps to set this project apart from other corporate lighting initiatives.Media Contacts: Jam Stewart, SC Johnson JMStewar@scj.com and (262) 260-6654

Lumenpulse LED Fixtures Illuminate "Lantern of Hope" at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert, AZ

Lumenpulse Inc. ( http://www.lumenpulse.com ), a leading innovator and manufacturer of high performance, architectural LED-based lighting solutions for commercial, institutional, and urban environments, today released a customer case study focused on a project for the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert, AZ. Lumenpulse fixtures were used to illuminate a 60-foot high, metal tower over the soon-to-be main entrance of the facility, to create the 'Lantern of Hope.'

The center, due to officially open in September 2011, set a design goal of transforming the metal tower structure into an inspiring beacon of light that would represent healing and hope for the center's patients and staff.A number of design challenges were presented by the unique tower structure and the physical environment it resided in. To meet these challenges the lighting designer used robust Lumenpulse fixtures to withstand extreme temperatures and dryness, with narrow optics and a custom mounting solution to achieve a fully controllable, uniform illumination without causing sky glow. The complete case study of the Lumenpulse installation at the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center can be viewed at: http://www.lumenpulse.com/en/newscentre/project/47 ."The Lumenpulse products out-performed their competitors in every aspect with the total package of performance, reach, cost, accessibility, adjustability, maintenance, and fixture look and design winning it for Lumenpulse. Also the ease of control through the Lumentouch control system -- which gives the center staff the ability to easily adjust the lighting to suit their facility's needs -- was another key element."About Lumenpulse Inc.Founded in 2006, Lumenpulse develops and manufactures high performance, sustainable architectural LED-based fixtures and solutions for commercial, institutional, and urban environments. Attention to detail in mechanical, optical and fixture design has positioned Lumenpulse as a leader in the global LED lighting marketplace for indoor and outdoor uses. CC students return to made-over student center

As Colorado College students return to campus, they'll notice a lot of changes when they walk inside Worner Campus Center.

Construction crews spent 84 days this summer working on a $9 million renovation of the campus hub near downtown Colorado SpringsThe center's roof now holds the largest solar array at the college. The first, installed in 2008 on top of a residential building, was instigated by students. A year later, then-Colorado College President Dick Celeste signed a climate pact promising to make the school more environmentally-friendly.The college decided to do more, Wise said. The $6 million for the rest of the changes came out of the fund that covers all the renovation projects at the school. In about 19 years the panels on Worner will have paid for themselves. The college expects other improvements to show similar cost savings, including lighting and roof insulation. The last time the 52-year-old building went through significant changes was during a 1988 expansion.Construction crews worked double shifts to complete the project in time. Classes resume Monday. The Worner Campus Center project is the most recent in a string of projects. Each time, the goal is to reduce energy use by 30 percent, Wise said. The kitchen was gutted and new equipment purchased for the renovated space."The main goal of the project was to reduce energy use by 30 percent," said William Wise, Colorado College facilities services building trades manager. He's confident that goal was reached. There are obvious things, like new paint on the walls and more meeting spaces in the building where students eat, study and relax. Rastall Dining Hall is redone, as is the cafe. Then there are less obvious improvements. When Colorado College signed a new food service contract with Bon Appetit, the company offered $3 million in improvements for a new kitchen and updated equipment.Every light in the building was replaced with a more efficient fixture. A 144-panel solar array was installed on the roof. Seven cooling and heating units - some dating to when the building first opened - were replaced with five more efficient ones.-The building got new water-saving toilets and a dishwasher that's touted as the greenest one in the state in terms of energy and water use, said Leslie Weddell, college news director.Contact the writer at 636-0162.The solar panels will contribute about 4 percent of the electricity needed for the building, saving about $3,800 a year."There was a very narrow window," Wise said. "Otherwise we're feeding 2,000 students three meals a day somewhere else.""Oh my God, Worner is so new," one student said when walking into the building Friday.

Ameobi: Toon team's spirit is just Sho strong

Byline: LEE RYDER

Accusations of problems behind the scenes have been rife this summer."It is not just about getting one over our rivals but also three huge points." The win took United's tally for the season to four points from two games having banked a draw with Arsenal last weekend."Derbies are tough. There are a lot emotions riding on them but you have to conceal them."It is about the team which can settle down in the atmosphere and take hold of the game.United emerged unbeaten yet again on Wearside having suffered just one loss in 31 years in the fixture and dented any hopes of Sunderland's first double over the Magpies since the 1966/67 season."We scored a great goal through Ryan and we had other chances as well. It was a fantastic day for us."SHOLA AMEOBI feels the victory at the Stadium of Light was a concise demonstration of the unity within the Newcastle United locker room. After the victory over the Black Cats, homegrown Academy product Ameobi added: "After last week's result we needed to build on it because it was against a good team in Arsenal."All the lads, even the ones who did not play, wanted to be here and were right behind us. That is very pleasing. However, Ameobi said team unity was there for all to see as each player backed each other up with interest in a game in which defeat sits uncomfortably among Toon fans.Even squad players such as Alan Smith still travelled with the squad as they put on a United front on Wearside.Ameobi put the win down to team spirit and told the Chronicle: "We have great togetherness."We did last season too, but it is not just the 11 who play.

"We scored a great goal through Ryan and we had other chances as well. It was a fantastic day for us."

Magnalight.com Announces Release of Emergency Backup Equipped Hazardous Location LED Light

DALLAS -- Larson Electronics’ Magnalight.com announced today the release of the HAL-EMG-48-2L-LED hazardous location LED light with emergency backup capability and Class 1 Division 2 ratings for Groups A, B, C and D. This LED fixture offers more light than comparable fluorescent fixtures, and includes a battery backup system that will continue light operation in the event of power failure.

The HAL-EMG-48-2L-LED Hazardous Area LED Light Fixture for industrial and commercial lighting applications contains LED tube lamps that produce more light than comparable 60 watt T5HO bulbs. This unit uses less power and operates over twice as long before requiring relamping. An internal battery and recharging system gives this fixture emergency lighting capability and a run time of 90 minutes in the event of power failures. The housing on this unit is constructed of copper free aluminum alloy with an aluminum framed glass door that is secured with four turn latches to protect the LED lamps. This unit can operate on voltages ranging from 120 VAC to 277 VAC, with optional 12-24 VDC versions also available. The LED design offers operators a lighter fixture weight, 50,000 hour lamp life, lower power consumption, excellent resistance to vibration and impacts, and high output and light quality that improves workplace safety and productivity. Additional LED light fixture benefits include reduced maintenance costs from increased lamp life and no need for ballasts which may occasionally fail and require replacing. These units are UL approved Class 1 Division 2, Groups A, B, C and D, and UL 595 Outdoor Marine Type (Saltwater), making them ideal for use in the petrochemical industry, and marine applications requiring this level of protection.Larson Electronics’ Magnalight.com carries an extensive line of explosion proof LED lights, hazardous location lights, intrinsically safe LED lights, portable explosion proof lights and intrinsically safe LED flashlights. Partitions of glass block let plenty of light through

Partitions of glass block let plenty of light through

Light pours through the glass blocks that fill all but the uppermost 15 inches of the bathroom's south-facing exterior wall. Two translucent partitions split the compact space into three alcoves--for the shower, two sinks, and a toilet. With the glass-block dividers just 4 inches thick, the plumbing fixtures all fit along one wall, cutting building costs. To avoid a sense of enclosure, the parallel partitions extent just 3 1/2 feet into the room and stop short of the ceiling, with the toilet baffle reaching 5 feet high, the shower wall 6 1/2 feet. Stairstepped blocks at the upper corners further reduce the sense of division. White walls, a generous mirror, and suspended cabinets below the sink also help make the space seem larger than it is.Customization is also the key to the company's recordkeeping success, vital to an operation with such a large and varied inventory. Thaw's daughter, Susan Thaw Winters, is vice president of operations and the architect of Bulbtronics' specially designed computer system. In addition to the usual accounting and inventory functions, the system cross-references every bulb by brand name, generic code and uses. Because of its extensive data on so many different suppliers' wares, several bulb makers have wanted to purchase the system, but Thaw's response is firm: She's not selling. "That information is part of the success of Bulbtronics--it's our 11 years of experience in the business,' says Thaw.Photo: Ribbed glass blocks form exterior wall, interior shower-stall wall, and partition between sinks and toilet. The shower area is deep enough not to require a curtain or a door, and a foot-tall splash sill keeps the water in. To prevent water from leaking between the blocks, a paint-on silicone sealer was applied over the grout.Owners are Mary and Ralph Williams.Thaw, who is "over 50,' became an entrepreneur after the importing company where she had worked for 10 years shut down in 1976. That company had imported light bulbs from Osram, a German supplier. Thaw obtained a distributorship from Osram, which welcomed the opportunity to retain a U.S. sales representative. The specialty light blub company, founded 11 years ago by Frances Thaw in Farmingdale, N.Y., stocks and distributes about 15,000 types of bulbs ranging from pinhead size to some standing six to eight feet tall. Prices vary from 8 cents per bulb to as much as $8,000 for a giant searchlight bulb.Photo: Four glass blocks capeach entry light. Bulb-changing door being opened above is framed with 1-by-2s. Ground-level openings facing the walk let cool air in-- and subtle light outImagine a world in which all the light bulbs burn out--not just those in room lights, but also in microscope lamps, operating room fixtures and emergency flashers. That will give you some idea of how essential Bulbtronics' wares are to modern life.Designed by Los Angeles interior designerJim Nisson, each started as a 14-inch-square, 24-inch-high topless plywood box on a concrete base. An outdoor electric floodlight fixture was centered on the base. The box has two openings: a 3- by 8-inch slot low on the sidewalk side to light the walk, and a hinged 5- by 6-inch door in the back for bulb changing. But they're more than lights; they're bigenough to define the walkway and draw guests to it.Plans for Bulbtronics include a West Coast office this year and a subsidiary called OEMlite, specializing in bulb sales to original equipment manufacturers, as Frances Thaw follows her vision of an ever brighter future in the lighting business.

At night, the solid glass-block tops give off a muted glow from floodlights housed within their stucco-covered plywood shells.Thaw keeps her overhead down by stocking the more unusual items in small quantities and making sure she has a market for them. "The turnover is the important thing,' she says. Those uncommon bulbs don't just sit there; she turns over her inventory six to seven times a year.
